Unit 15 Gerunds

I chose this topic because I think that is very important to learn how to identify, when you are speaking writing or reading, if you have to use gerunds, nouns or verbs in the progressive form.
A gerund is a noun made from a verb and is composed by a verb in the base form and the -ing.

Types of gerunds and examples:

1.- Gerunds as a subject.- The structure is: Gerund (subject) +verb +object


  • Traveling is their hobby.
Gerund: Traveling
Verb : is
Object : their hobby.

2.- Gerund as Object.- The structure is: subject+verb + Gerund (object)

  • I remembered learning, as a child, a phrase like this “True friends as diamonds, false are oak leaves”
Subject : I
Verb : remembered
Object : learning.

3.- Gerunds as a subject complement.- The structure is: subject + verb + Gerund (Subject complemnent)

  • Their favorite activity is climbing mountains.
Subject : Their favorite activity
Verb : is
Gerund : climbing.

4.- Gerunds as Object Complement

  • He usually spends a lot of time searching for a new job.
Subject=He
Verb=usually spends
Object= a lot of time
Gerund=searching.

5.- Gerund as object of preposition
  • We became friends by riding with each other and developed a good relationship.
Preposition=by
Gerund= riding

6.-Possesive gerund
  • I know see that my perceiving friendship in this way was pretty simplistic
Possesive: my
gerund: perceiving

7.-Simple Active Gerunds
  • Honest friends avoid telling you what you need to hear when you need to hear it.
8.-Perfect Active Gerunds
  • Having gone through difficult experiences has bonded us for life.
    Passive gerunds
9.-Simple Passive Gerunds
  • Being forced to socialize with an unknown person is not a good idea.
10.-Perfect Passive Gerunds
  • Having been invited to meetings for years allowed him to make many friends.
